Do What Works

Simple. Obvious. Yet, do we practice this?

I thought of this when I was examining our social media strategy at Family Life Church.

I love twitter. People that go to the conferences I go to love twitter. Our staff loves twitter.

But, the majority of our church attendees and community don’t use Twitter.

They use Myspace and Facebook. Seriously, Myspace is still popular in South Georgia.

Three Twitter Tips

TwitterIf you aren’t a Twitter user, don’t hang up the phone (er, don’t stop reading).

Here is a great place to start: Michael Hyatt’s 20 Minute Guide to Twitter before reading the tips. At Family Life Church, we ask all of our ministry associates to go through this before their first tweet as part of their training.

Here are three Twitter Tips:

1. Know When To DM

Have you ever felt like someone was using Twitter as a personal texting service to connect with their spouse or drunk uncle? I have. It makes me vomit in my mouth.

If your tweet adds zero value to anyone other than the person in the @ reply, then send a DM. If it is funny, a nugget o’ truth or a namedrop-then it is alright to use the @ reply. Just don’t abuse the power!

Social Media.

A hot topic, buzzword phrase that went from hipster to Wikipedia to common knowledge for middle school students in less than a minute.
