Yep, I Work On Saturday

Several friends and people that are involved in our church have asked me what I was doing today (today = Saturday).

I told them that I would be in the office for six hours (shorter than our usual workday).

Some of them were confused, others freaked out, there was even gnashing of teeth!

Just so you know, our executive staff (including our Lead Pastor) work six days a week.

When people ask me about it, they tend to say that is unhealthy.

Well, here is my response (okay, I stole it from my wife Hannah).

She said, “The six day work week is biblical…and I don’t think God would have us do anything that was unhealthy.”

I agree.

It is not that working five days is anti-biblical (or a sign that you are a satanist), it is simply that working six days and resting for one is a biblical principle.

In fact, this idea or notion of a weekend is to be a Western concept of sorts.

So. That’s my take on it.

If you work at a church (or anywhere else for that matter) and you have two days off a week, sweet!

I am happy for you. If I were in your shoes, I would enjoy it.

I am noticing that it gets tricky trying to fit ministry into the box of “9-5″ especially if you are in the role of a pastor.

It is even trickier to evaluate someone else’s context.

You got my attention with this one. :) What do you think about a five day work week (perhaps extended hours beyond 9-5), a work day reserved for work around home (yardwork, car washing, general home maintenance, etc) & one day as a Sabbath? I enjoy your writing. Trying to read it more.

I think that is a decision that has to be made from the top.

My intent for this post was to respond to those that claim a six day work week is unhealthy. It may be unpopular and less mainstream for churches to hold this type of schedule, but it does have a biblical basis (and thus, cannot be unhealthy).

I have nothing personally wrong with a five day work week, but for me, that opinion doesn’t really hold water since I am not the head honcho.
